Albert Koenig, of Jordan, went to be with the Lord on May 21, 2016 at the age of 91. Mass of Christian Burial is Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 11:00 AM with visitation from 9:00 – 11:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan. Father Thomas Joseph will preside. Albert will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Jordan, and his grandsons will act as pallbearers.
On June 1, 1924, John and Theresa (Pieper) Koenig welcomed their son, Albert Joseph Koenig, into the world. He was the second of seven children, and loved growing up on the family farm in Belle Plaine where he developed his strong work ethic. As a boy, Albert was active in 4-H, loved fishing and was a member of Golden Gloves Boxing.
Albert attended New Prague High School where he met the love of his life, Roselyn Schoenecker. After graduation, Roselyn pursued her nursing degree in Rochester. Albert waited patiently for Roselyn to finish her schooling and return home. It was well worth the wait. Albert and Roselyn exchanged wedding vows at St. Wenceslaus Church in New Prague on June 8, 1948.
They settled on a farm between in Jordan to raise their family. They were blessed with nine wonderful children, David, Kay, Dan, Karen, Barbara, Brian, Terese, Lisa and Tom. As a family, they enjoyed taking trips up to their cabin on Blackhoof Lake. Albert had always loved fishing, and he was able to pass this love onto his children.
When one of their daughters developed asthma, Albert and Roselyn bought a home in Florida and began heading south for the winter. The whole family would hop in the car and make the trip down. Albert would pick oranges in the morning until Roselyn left for work as a nurse. Around Easter they’d pack up and head back home to the farm. They did this for more than ten years until their family was too big to fit into one car.
After 45 years of farming, Albert retired in 1990. He and Roselyn moved to the lake in Shieldsville. This was perfect for Albert, because he had the time and space to pursue all of his hobbies. He had a workshop where he restored tractors and antique boat motors. Albert also had plenty of time to fish. He spent lots of time on the water looking for the perfect catch. Throughout the years, he also took many fishing trips to Canada with family and friends.
Fishing was a huge part of Albert’s life, but the thing that he was most passionate about was his family. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandkids. Albert and Roselyn attended countless ball games, dance recitals, concerts and graduations. They also loved having the grandkids over for sleepovers at the lake. He taught the grandkids to fish, play cards and loved making them laugh.
He also instilled a strong faith in his children and grandchildren. Albert led by example and was a very faithful man. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and was a Fourth Degree Knight. He even served as Grand Knight for a period of time. Faith, family, farming and fishing all played a big role in his life.
Albert will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Roselyn; children, Kay (Tom) Cloutier, Dan (Carol) Koenig, Karen (Mark) Anderson, Barbara Boucher, Brian (Lorri) Koenig, Terese (Tom) Mitchell, Lisa Sweeney, Tom (Shari) Koenig; 22 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; siblings, Martha Zweber, Lawrence (Ann) Koenig, Jane (Terry) Armon and Bob (Theresa) Koenig.
There to greet Albert in Heaven is his son, David; great-grandson, Karson; parents; brother, Joe (Marcella) Koenig; sister, Lucille (John Connolly and Cletus Hayden); brother-in-law, Tony Zweber; sister-in-law, Carol Koenig.
