On March 13, 1933, Bonnie Jean Hughes was born to Carmen Hughes in Minot, North Dakota. Bonnie was an only child and raised by her grandparents, Fred & Nellie Hughes in Crosby, North Dakota. In high school, Bonnie met the love of her life, Lloyd Johnson. They were voted Homecoming King & Queen their senior year. Bonnie graduated from Crosby High School in 1951.
Following graduation, Lloyd was drafted into the military. Before he was deployed overseas, Bonnie and Lloyd were married on April 5, 1952. It was a double wedding at the Justice of the Peace in Indiana. Lloyd shipped out soon after their wedding and Bonnie remained in North Dakota while Lloyd was overseas.
After Lloyd’s honorable discharge, they settled in Prior Lake, Minnesota and started a family. Bonnie and Lloyd had three wonderful children, Brent, Denise and Danell. Bonnie and Lloyd taught their children the importance of faith, family and hard work.
As a family they enjoyed the simple things in life. They attended church every Sunday and spent weekends with extended family. Bonnie always kept a meticulous home and had a family dinner prepared every night. While the kids were young, Bonnie worked outside the home as the school secretary. After Bonnie left her job as school secretary, she ran an in-home daycare for 20+ years. Bonnie cared for many children over the years and had a special bond with each of them.
In her free time, Bonnie enjoyed canning meats, fruits, and vegetables. She enjoyed fishing at their lake home and taking trips up to her family’s farmland in Crosby. Bonnie loved cheering on the Vikings, painting and quilting. She also enjoyed being outside admiring the birds and flowers.
Bonnie always lived a simple life focused around her family. She loved her husband and children so much, but nothing beat being a grandma. Bonnie adored her grandchildren and their beautiful families.
Bonnie was a kind and generous woman. She had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. Bonnie was easy to love and always had a positive outlook. Throughout her life, Bonnie had many blessings, and she never took them for granted. She always said, “We are so blest!”
She will be remembered always by her husband of 71 years, Lloyd Johnson; children, Brent (Kimber) Johnson, Denise (Charles) Melcher & Danell Johnson; grandchildren, Branden (Laura) Johnson, Benjamin (Lisa) Johnson, Dylan (Taylor) Melcher, Cameron (Haley) Melcher, Alexandra (Chris Nasuti) Melcher Nasuti; great-grandkids, Mason (Keely), Helena (fiancé Matt), Michaela (Gunnar), Jaclyn (Tristan), Kaitlyn (Nick), Ryder, Gianna, Mila, Livia; great-great-grandchild, Emery; dearest friends, Donna Gerdes and Norman & Denie Sticha; other loving relatives and friends.
Bonnie was greeted in Heaven by her grandparents, Fred & Nellie Hughes; mother, Carmen Glass; and all her relatives who went before her.
