Cy’s life story
Cyril “Cy” A. Hartman
On January 10, 1934 Cyril Alex Hartman was born in St. Benedict, MN to parents Lawrence and Margaret (Stang) Hartman. Cy and his twin sister Cyrilla were a welcomed addition to the Hartman family. As a child Cy loved working on the family farm and playing baseball for the St. Benedict Saints.
As a young man, Cy often attended local dances. It was at one of these that a beautiful, young woman caught his eye. Cy walked right up to her and said, “Where have you been all my life?” That woman was Marlene Geis. The two dated for two years before Cy enlisted in the Army. They continued dating while he was away on active duty for two years. It wasn’t long after he was honorably discharged that the two were married. Cy and Marlene exchanged vows in Marystown on May 18, 1957. They made a life for themselves in Jordan, MN and were soon blessed with six beautiful children, Laureen, LouAnn, LeeAnn, Larry, Lynne and Lanny. Cy always kept treats for each of his kids in his lunch box.
Cy worked at a number of local businesses in Jordan before beginning his career at Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative. He started out as a lineman and was eventually promoted to a foreman. After 36 years at MVEC, Cy retired in 1996. He kept busy with part-time work at Ridges Golf Course and Jordan Transformer.
In retirement, Cy enjoyed spending time with his wife and family. Marlene and Cy took many bus tours together and visited Washington D.C., Branson, MO and the Canadian Rockies.
Farming and Woodworking were also passions of Cy’s. He made numerous shelf canoes and birdhouses which he often donated to the church or other local organizations. Cy enjoyed attending live auctions and flea markets, listening to old-time music, watching sports and playing cards. Most important to Cy was his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Cy was known to all as a fun guy, always the jokester as he had a habit of playing pranks on those closest to him.
Cy spent his last months at Oak Terrace where he received excellent care and compassion from the staff at Oak Terrace and Allina Hospice. Cy Hartman, age 79, died peacefully surrounded his by family the evening of Thursday, November 14, 2013. He will be missed as a faithful husband, caring father and loving grandpa.
Cy will be remembered always by his wife, Marlene (Geis) Hartman of Jordan; children, Laureen (Keith) Warden of Jordan, LouAnn (Dave) Thomas of Jordan, LeeAnn (Chris) Oldsberg of Shakopee, Larry (fiancé Lee) Hartman of Jordan, Lynne(Lyle) Weckman of Jordan, Lanny (Kari) Hartman of Jordan; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Rose Brown, Jule Franke, Cyrilla Pint, Ann Walter, Roger Hartman, Leon Hartman; other loving relatives and friends.
Cy is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Werner Hartman, Armella Mladek, Dee Hartman and Cele Pekarna.
