David N. Gunderson

David Gunderson Passed away on Friday June 14, 2024. He was born December 29, 1949 in Austin Minnesota to Norton and Lorraine (Follmuth) Gunderson.

David showed early a penchant for academic excellence and always maintained an “A” average throughout his primary and secondary education. David worked summers before and during college at the Hormel Institute, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Mankato State University (Minnesota State University Mankato).

After receiving his bachelor’s degree, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he became a Military Policeman and attained the rank of sergeant (SP4).

After he was honorably discharged from the army, he returned home and re-enrolled at Mankato State earning a master’s in history. He was employed for a short time again by the Hormel Institute. He was then hired by the Social Security Administration in Mankato Minnesota, and later joined the Internal Revenue Service as a claims officer. He received a “Michael Dillon Award” for outstanding dedication. He retired from the I.R.S after more than thirty years of service.

David in retirement became a skilled woodworker who had a fine collection of power and hand tools.

He also was very interested in railroading, he collected memorabilia and during the summer he worked at the museum in Dalton Minnesota.

David was preceded in death by his parents and brother Loren and is survived by his loving sister Joann Gunderson. He will be interred in the Fort Snelling Cemetery.
