A current resident of New Prague and longtime resident of Lydia, Delbert Jasmer, was 93 when he passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, February 3, 2015, at Mala Strana Health Care Center, in New Prague, MN.

The Reverend Dr. Brent Parrish will preside. His son Curtis Jasmer and grandsons, Paul Jasmer, Dan Lambrecht, Allen Chalmers, T.J. Neisen and Chase Jasmer will be the pallbearers. Delbert will be laid to rest at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, with full military honors provided by the Prior Lake V.F.W.

On September 20, 1921 in Verndale, MN, Adolph and Emma (Ellis) Jasmer, held in their hands a tiny premature baby boy, named Delbert Wallace Jasmer. Small enough to rest in a cigar box, with arms smaller than his father’s wedding ring, he was not expected to survive. Delbert was a tough and fearless boy. He grew up in Todd County, MN, with his three sisters and two brothers. As a young boy, Delbert became quite fond of fishing, hunting and trapping. Growing up during the depression, Delbert recalls tough survival times and watching the packer cars driving by during the prohibition years.

A proud American, Delbert served his country in the Unites States Army from October 17, 1942 to October 25, 1945. Stationed in England, Northern France and Central Europe, he was awarded three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, three Overseas Service Bars, EAME Campaign Ribbon and Unit Citation Motor Vehicle Driver Award, for all of his efforts. Working various jobs at first, Delbert worked for Schultz Oliver Implement in Lydia as a mechanic for over 20 years. He spent another 18 years at Toro in Bloomington, before retiring in 1986, due to an eye condition.

Through a mutual friend and a cousin, Delbert, unbeknown to him, was introduced to his bride of 68 years, Irene Marie Kohout. While away at war, they stayed in contact with each other through letters. On a beautiful day of May 16, 1946, Delbert married Irene. For over 60 years, they called home in Lydia, where they raised seven children, Darrell, Douglas, Vicki, Cheryl, Paula, Curtis and Robert.

Family was most important to him. They enjoyed the annual summer vacation up north or traveling to Washington State. Countless hours were spent fishing with cane poles, in hopes of a few good meals. As the family grew in size, so did the house. Delbert was a gifted handyman. Through the years, he updated the home and completed extensive remodels, with his boys at his side.

Delbert loved playing cards, making horseradish with the Old Duffers Horseradish Club and deer hunting with his boys and neighbors. A proud grandpa, he relished taking them on vacations and teaching them how to fish. Delbert was patient with the granddaughters and held high ethical standards for the grandsons.

With a love for a good prank, Delbert was hard working, opinionated and strong willed. He passed on to the children and grandchildren, his strong values, strength of character and the need of a strong dedication to our faith. Left to honor Delbert’s life and mourn the death is his wife, Irene; children, Darrell (Janet) Jasmer, Douglas (Nancy) Jasmer, Vicki (Elmer Jr.) Lambrecht, Cheryl (Jerry) Chalmers, Paula Neisen, Curtis Jasmer, Robert (Christine) Jasmer; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; sisters, Bernitta (Richard) Swift, Eleanor (Everett) Ostlund; other relatives and friends.

There to welcome Delbert home in heaven is his parents, Adolph and Emma; grandsons, Marc and Andrew Jasmer; sister, Ruth (Eskil) Holmquist; brothers, Alfred Jasmer, Elsworth (Bernita) Jasmer and 2 infant brothers.
