Douglas S. Kelly, age 56 of Prior Lake, passed away on February 10, 2022. Services will be held in the springtime and Doug will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye, MN.
On November 14, 1965 in Sleepy Eye, MN, parents Darrel and Diane (Wooldrik) Kelly celebrated the birth of their son Douglas Scott Kelly. He was the middle of their three sons. The family eventually settled on a farm near Lydia. It’s here the Kelly brothers found mischief—exploring the countryside, the woods, skiing on Cedar Lake, and always having a good time! They were always outdoors whether they were playing or helping their mom in her garden.
Following Doug’s graduation from Jordan High School in 1984, he furthered his education at vocational school. This led to a career as a mechanic working in aviation and later with racecars. During his time as an aviation mechanic, Doug worked throughout the United States. In 2008, he returned to Minnesota and found his true passion in life—Legend Car racing.
While working at Brock’s flooring, Dougie was introduced to Legend and Bandolero race cars. Mechanically inclined and passionate, soon Dougie was working as the Chief Lead Mechanic at Great North Legends. Along with his coworkers and friends, Dougie attended the racing circuits throughout the United States. He traveled to Florida, Texas, North Carolina, and everywhere in between. At home in Minnesota, Dougie was a regular at the Elko Speedway. He especially enjoyed mentoring and supporting younger racers.
Dougie had the biggest heart. He never hesitated to help others and was generous with his time & talents. A reliable and caring man, he is missed deeply by those who love him.
Doug is survived by his brothers, Daniel Kelly and Darren Kelly; niece, Melissa Kelly and her mom, Jodie; nephew, Bradley Kelly; uncles and aunts, John (Carole) Wooldrik, James (Marcia) Wooldrik, Mary Wooldrik; cousin, Joshua Wooldrik; other loving relatives and good friends.
Doug is reunited in Heaven with his parents, Darrel and Diane Kelly; uncle, Steve Wooldrik; nephew, Shane Kelly.
