Betty’s life story

Elizabeth “Betty” Sunder

On November 2, 1933 in Chaska, MN, Betty Young was born to parents Horace and Margaret (Hart) Young. She was the third youngest of nine children. Betty fondly recalls spending time helping run their family owned movie theatre (REX Theatre) as a child on into her adulthood.

Following graduation from Chaska high school in 1951, Betty attended St. Catherine’s College where she received her degree as a registered nurse. She then worked many years as a Clinic, Hospital and School nurse. After raising her family, she once again attended St. Catherine’s to earn a BA in nursing. With that education, she then helped those with chemical dependency issues, mental health issues and home health care needs. While she was raising the children, she also helped operate the family general store (Sunder’s Department Store).

After a night of bowling, Betty and two of her Jordan girlfriends decided to stop at Ruppert’s Bar in Jordan where she met Paul Sunder. Not having a ride back to Chaska, Paul offered his services and the rest is history….Betty married Paul Sunder on August 16, 1958 at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Chaska. They were blessed with five children, Patrick, Michael, Thomas, Paula and Mary.

Betty was active at St. John’s Catholic Church as a Befriender, Eucharistic Minister, the Mixed Choir and being the School Nurse. She served on the Board of Directors at Queen of Peace hospital as well as the Minnesota Nurses Association. She also was a member of the Jordan Lioness, the Jordan Community Theatre and the Red Hatters.

Next to her family, she was most proud of her Irish heritage. She enjoyed decorating for the seasons, especially St. Patrick’s Day. She loved to read, swim, walk, and golf. She also enjoyed socializing with several groups of friends, especially entertaining nursing classmates, neighbors, bridge, sheephead and birthday club friends. Some of her fondest memories were up north at Sunder’s cabin.

A woman who was full of life and always thinking of how she can help others, Betty entered God’s arms on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at the age of 80 at Mala Strana Health Care Center.

Deeply missed and remembered always by those who loved Betty, husband of 55 years, Paul; children, Pat (Kim) Sunder of Burnsville, Mike Sunder of Prior Lake, Tom (Pam) Sunder of Bloomington, Paula (John) Nowariak of Eagan, Mary (Brian) Feltmann of Jordan; grandchildren, Brittany, Natalie, Andy, Teddy, Tony, Tommy, Krista, Gregg, and Brandon; siblings, Mary (Wally) Lahl, Elmer (Mary Ann) Young, Wally (Hannah) Young, Irene (John) Perrill; sister in laws Betty Young, June Young; brother in law, Frank Kurvers and other loving relatives and devoted friends.
