Elmer “Butch” Oldenburg

On Monday, April 30, 1923 on the family farm in Lydia, MN, Elmer Herbert was born to parents Verne and Clara (Voigt) Oldenburg. One of eleven children, his childhood years were spent growing up in Lydia and attending Lydia school.

Butch proudly served in the United States Army. He received the Victory Medal and honorable discharge in 1947. On Saturday, May 29, 1948, in the pastor’s house of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Jordan, Butch married Marion LaVaughn King. They were blessed with ten children and last May celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary.

In 1950, Butch bought a milk route from Gilbert Stier. From 1962-1971, he was the owner of Butch’s Corner Bar in Jordan. Most of Butch’s career was spent working for Thermo King Corporation as a painter from 1968-1988. He was often known for working two jobs to support his growing family of 12.

An active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Butch was also dedicated to the Jordan Vets Honor Guard. He enjoyed bowling, card playing with family and friends, travelling and spending weekends at the Lake. Butch could be heard cheering on the Jordan Brewers baseball team and the Minnesota Twins.

The early morning hours of Thursday, September 5, 2013, Butch, age 90, entered God’s arms at Friendship Manor Nursing Home in Shakopee, MN.

Deeply missed and remembered always by those who loved him. Loved and missed by wife, Marion of Jordan; children, Vickie Novak of Chanhassen, Vonnie McWilliams of Prior Lake, Pennie Mohlin of Brooklyn Park, Sherrie (Harlan) Johnson of Lilydale, Rick Oldenburg of Chaska, Tracie Pekarna of Chaska, Trudie (Scott) Steiner of Ettrick, WI, Tammie Oldenburg of Chaska, Leslie Oldenburg of Corcoran, Guy Oldenburg of Brandon, FL; 23 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; brother, Ron (Shari) Oldenburg; brothers-in-law, Frank Richardson, Roger King, Steve Borchardt; sisters-in-law, Myrtle Oldenburg, JoAnn Oldenburg, MaryAnn Oldenburg, Pat Oldenburg; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceded in death by, parents, Verne and Clara; son-in-law, Edward Novak; sisters, Lyda Oldenburg, Ruth (Lambert) Seuer, Marlys Richardson; brothers, Marvin, Clarence, Virgil (Sue) Vernon “Pete”, Howard and Lawrence Oldenburg

Butch’s two sons Rick and Guy will be the urn bearers.

The Celebration of Life Service will be on Wednesday, September 11 at 11 am, with visitation two hours prior all at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 100 West Sixth Street in Jordan. Pastor Jeremy Glowicki will preside. Butch will be honored with full military honors provided by the Jordan Vets Honor Guard.
