Nyunt Nyunt “Emerald” Thein, age 73, passed away on June 17, 2023. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, June 23, 2023 at First Burma Christ Church, 499 Wacouta St. S., St. Paul, MN, with Reverend Mehm Mya Thi officiating. Visitation time will be held prior to services from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. Interment St. Michael Catholic Cemetery, Prior Lake.
Nyunt Nyunt Thein “Emerald” was born in Rangoon, Burma on 16 May 1950 to parents U Wilson Thein and Daw Maisie Thein. She is the second daughter out of a total of eight siblings.
She attended the American Baptist Missionary School (ABM) in Rangoon. After passing high school, she attended the Rangoon Arts and Science University where she obtained her B.Sc. degree, majoring in Chemistry in 1972. She is also the holder of BRE and MACEd degrees.
She worked as an apprentice at the Department of Medical Research where she met her spouse, Thant Zin. They were married on 31st January 1976 at the Judson Church in Rangoon. On 22 December 1982 she gave birth to their only daughter, Wut Hmone Thant.
Emerald joined the Myanmar Radio and Television, first as a radio announcer, and later transferred to the TV section. She was the first announcer to go on air when television was first introduced in Burma in 1980. She was awarded a fellowship to study Television Technics at the Australian Film and Television School in Sydney. During her service with the Myanmar Radio and Television, in addition to presenting news, she produced many programs relating to health and domestic science, proudly presenting her family and friends in these programs as her stars every opportunity she got. Every project she worked on was special and personal for her.
Emerald took part in many extracurricular activities and took joy in dancing, Tai Chi, meditation, Karaoke, and games with her family and friends. She served as an executive committee member in her old university and staff associations. During her university days she went to the remote areas with some friends to teach the 3R’s (Reading, Writing and Arithmetic) to the illiterate people.
She loves traveling and had many trips both in-country and abroad with her husband and friends, visiting places like Jerusalem, Egypt, Jordan, the Taj Mahal, Tokyo, Paris, Sydney, Honolulu, and many more. Above all, she took deep pride in her home country of Myanmar Pyi (Burma) and was always hopeful for the good of her country.
Most people knew Emerald as a radio and TV announcer over her years, but her true passion was always deeply rooted in creativity. Her identity is rooted in her love of living life to the fullest with faith, purpose, and love. God’s light always shined through her creations, whether it be through her projects, picking paint colors on her home, planning celebrations of all kinds, or crafting beautiful flower arrangements in the way of Ikebana. She even planned her own funeral near the end of her life.
Emerald cherished other’s creations as well, and had a deep faith in her Creator, finding truth through trust and faith in Jesus Christ. She was strong in faith and strong in her battle with cancer. From day one to the end, she was calm and collected, building and maintaining her strength surrounding herself with the love of her family and friends. Every moment with her loved ones was a reason to celebrate and she treasured every moment with her husband, daughter, and granddaughters during her final moments. Emerald wore her crown proudly until the very end.
She is survived by her dedicated husband of 47 years, U Thant Zin “Victor Kyaw Sein”; only daughter, Wut Hmone Thant, son-in-law, Justin Putz; two granddaughters, Rylynn Amara Putz and Renae Alainmar Putz; and many other family and friends.

သူမသည် Burma မြန်မာပြည်ကိုလည်းချစ်ခင်သောနိုင်ငံသားကောင်းတစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်ပြီး၊ သူတတ်နိုင်သောခွန်းအားဖြင့်သူမ၏နိုင်ငံအပေါ် မျှော်လင့်ချက်ကြီးစွာ ၊ နောက်ဆုံး အချိန်အထိထားခဲ့သူဖြစ်ပါသည်။ အားလုံးကို အထူးဘဲ ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါသည်။
