Evelyn’s life story

Evelyn C. Hunsader

On Thursday, November 11, 1937, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, Evelyn Cora was born to the parents Jay L and Grace M. (Mills) Runyan. She was the youngest of six children. Evelyn’s childhood years were spent growing up on a family farm in Woodbine, Iowa. She attended a country school through eighth grade. During high school summer breaks, she traveled to Omaha, Nebraska to be a nanny. In 1955, Evelyn graduated from Woodbine High School, where she was a member of the Future Homemakers of America.

Furthering her education at Rochester Methodist Kahler School of Nursing, Evelyn earned a degree as a Registered Nurse. She also had additional training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago in the emergency room. Working for a period of time in Rochester, Evelyn eventually moved to Minneapolis to work at a local hospital. In later years, she took her nursing skills to Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague. In the end, Evelyn spent most of her career at Fairview University of Minnesota Hospital, until retiring in 2010.

Introduced through mutual friends, Evelyn met Arthur William “Bill” Hunsader. They courted for a time and on Tuesday, June 28, 1966 in Minnesota, Evelyn married Bill. They were blessed with a beautiful son, Jed. Establishing their roots first in Burnsville, Evelyn and Bill later moved to Prior Lake in 1972. For the next 40 years, she called Prior Lake her home. Life changed for Evelyn with the passing of Bill on September 16, 1996.

An active and dedicated member of the church, Evelyn spent countless hours tending to her flowers and landscaping her yard. She enjoyed refinishing furniture and boating on Prior Lake. A love of collecting antiques, Evelyn enjoyed hunting for the perfect piece at nearby garage sales. Evelyn enjoyed watching Andrew and Benjamin play basketball and baseball. She was so proud of her grandsons and loved them unconditionally.

A loving and caring mother, grandma and sister, Evelyn had this strong and independent will, with a determined mind set to conquer anything. The early evening of Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Augustana Health Care Center in Apple Valley, MN, Evelyn passed away peacefully surrounded by her family the entire day, at the age of 75.

Deeply missed and remembered always by those who loved Evelyn, son, Jed and wife Nikki Hunsader of Belle Plaine; grandsons, Andrew and Benjamin; sisters, Mary Anne Matteson, Harlan, IA, Eva Lou (Larry) Meyers of Burlington, IA; sister-in-law, Joann Runyan of Omaha, NE; other loving relatives and devoted friends.
