Gary Ross Syde passed away at his home on New Year’s Day at the age of 55. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandpa, son and brother.
A gathering of family and friends will be held, Saturday January 11th from 10am -12 noon at Ballard Sunder Funeral and Cremation, 4565 Pleasant Street SE, Prior Lake. Gary’s celebration and luncheon will follow at the Prior Lake VFW, Prior Lake.
On July 19, 1964, Dale and Helen (Halvorson) Syde celebrated the birth of their son, Gary Ross Syde. He was one of five children. Growing up in Bloomington was fun for Gary. He enjoyed hanging out with friends, fast cars, laying out in the sun and getting into a little mischief. He even survived a wild party at his mom and dad’s (unbeknownst to them) where patrol officers arrived on horses. He thoroughly enjoyed his teenage years and proudly graduated from Bloomington Jefferson in 1982. Gary always had a love for 70’s and 80’s music and later on enjoyed country and gospel music.
In 1987 Gary met Julie Thompson, they married in 1990 and were blessed with two boys, Brady and Benjamin who turned into admirable young men. They spent their years camping, fishing, snowmobiling and enjoyed time at the cabin. Even though Gary and Julie separated ways they still made sure the boys were taken care of and loved.
Early in his career, Gary enjoyed managing an auto parts store. Shortly after that he found his true calling as the head custodian for 26 years at the Chaska Middle School East. At school, you might see Gary balancing brooms on his fingertips to entertain the kids at lunch time or seeing him giving every kid he passed a hi five or knuckles! It was a great disappointment for Gary when he needed to retire as his health deteriorated.
Gary had a heart of gold and it showed as he took a mission trip with his bible study group to Haiti. This is where he found inner peace helping build structures for those who were underprivileged and in dire need.
In 2008, while in St. Patrick’s restaurant and bar, Gary saw a girl and told his friend, “that’s the one I’m going to marry”. Gary met Kim Hyer and wrote his phone number on a $5.00 bill and gave it to her. After eight months of conversing back and forth on the phone and never dating, they ultimately decided to see each other in person and were married in Chaska at the town center gazebo on July 31, 2009. They were both proud to raise a blended family.
Gary and Kim enjoyed their time at their home on Spring lake, much of it spent with their neighbors, Kevin and Sherrie. 4th of July and Dozinsky Days were a couple of highlights each year that they were together. Their real love was spending time with their grandchildren. Gary was most proud that he could spend four years living together with his grandson, Peyton. Gary was a loving and caring man, who could also be a jokester and make people laugh.
Gary will be sorely missed by his wife Kim, puppy dog Miss Bella; sons, Brady (Brittany) Syde, Benjamin Syde; stepsons, Colton (Ashley) Luhmann, Jamie (Hannah) Luhmann; grandchildren, Kiaya, Landen, Peyton, Bailey, Kayden, Lucy, Henry; sister, Tammy Syde; kids Cheyene, Trace.
He will be welcomed in to heaven by his parents, Dale and Helen (Halvorson) Syde; siblings, Scott Syde, Jeff Syde, Lon “Chip” Syde.
