Harry’s life story
Harold “Harry” Henry Borchardt
On September 5, 1933 in Spring Lake Township, MN Harold Henry was the eighth of eleven children born to Herman and Mathilda (Grapper) Borchardt. Harry’s childhood was spent on the family farm trapping, hunting, gardening, raising animals, and farming the land. He attended Fish Lake Immanuel Lutheran School where his lifelong devotion to the church began.
When he was 23, friends set Harry up on a date with Mary Spande. They came from very different backgrounds, Harry growing up on a rural farm and Mary being a city girl from Bloomington, but their love grew. After a year-long courtship they exchanged wedding vows on June 7, 1958 at Wood Lake Lutheran Church in Richfield, MN. Harry and Mary took over the family farm in 1960 and were soon blessed with three children, Rick, Jody and Peter.
In 1968 Harry and Mary sold the family farm to Continental Machine. Harry worked for the company farming the local land surrounding Cleary Lake for 21 years. Following his work with Continental Machine, Harry owned his own cleaning service for nine years before retiring.
Once retired, Harry enjoyed spending time with his wife walking the trails in the woods by their home and traveling. Together they visited Norway, the Bahamas, Alaska, and many other places. Gardening was another passion of Harry’s and he loved growing organic fruits and vegetables. He was known for his famous Concord grape juice. He thoroughly enjoyed fishing trips to Makinen, MN with his brother Steve. Harry loved playing music, tinkering with machines, helping others and attending services at Immanuel Lutheran. Harry was known to all as a man of strong faith.
Harry’s two-year long battle with cancer came to an end the afternoon of Sunday, June 9, 2013. Harry Borchardt, age 79, entered God’s arms at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, MN. He will be missed as a faithful husband, caring dad, loving grandpa and devoted Christian.
