Helen’s story
Born on Wednesday, June 30, 1915 in New Prague, MN, Helen Margaret was the daughter to parents John and Emma (Scharf) Meyer. She was the fifth of six children. Helen’s childhood years were spent in New Prague, with attending school through the ninth grade.
When Helen first came to Minneapolis she worked in Dayton’s Sky Room as a waitress. However, most of Helen’s career was spent as a cook for the Richfield Public Schools. Helen married Vandeline J. David (Van) on Saturday, September 6, 1941 in Jordan, MN. They were blessed with two sons, James and Thomas. Van passed on December 6, 1986. Helen remarried on Sunday, April 8, 1990 to Herman E. Krueger. Helen welcomed three step-sons to the family, Robert, Paul and Mark and their families. Herman passed on March 2, 1993.
Helen volunteered for Lutheran Social Services. She enjoyed working with her friends at the thrift store in Minneapolis and even traveled with her friends to Hopkins when the store moved to a new location. She enjoyed cooking wonderful meals, especially when friends or relatives brought her fresh vegetables or freshly caught fish. She prepared most of her own meals at Kingsway unless there was shrimp on the menu in the dining room. Then she made sure to eat dinner in the dining room and enjoy the shrimp. She was an avid card player. It didn’t matter what card game she played, she often was the winner. She loved to collect angels and friends and relatives often brought her one when they traveled. Several of her angels were displayed in the Kingsway museum.
Helen was a loving mother who dearly loved her sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to travel and easily made friends everywhere she went. One of the staff members from Kingsway said “She had a soul that drew you to her”. Helen lived a long life. She often stated that she was ready to go home to Heaven and see the face of God who she talked to daily.
