Helen Mae was born on January 31,1932, to parents Joseph and Elizabeth (Hart) Vaughan in New Prague, MN. She grew up on the family farm with her four siblings where they learned how to work hard but to also find time for fun. Her and her sisters loved watching her father and brother play baseball and that love of baseball carried on throughout her life.
Helen would go on to graduate from New Prague High School in 1949, spending her junior year at Villa Maria in Frontenac, MN. After graduation, Helen stayed home and worked on her parents’ farm. She loved to spend her time working with the animals, cooking, and baking.
Helen’s life truly changed when she met her future husband, William “Bill” Casey, at a dance in Spring Lake, MN. They married on August 29, 1959, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, in St. Patrick, MN. Helen moved from her parents’ farm to the farm her and Bill bought together. Helen and Bill welcomed their six beautiful children into their lives and instilled their farm values of hard work and dedication into their family.
When the kids were young, she made time for fun, putting them in sports and other activities. As the kids grew and Helen found more time for herself, she would go with friends to the casino and looked forward to playing cards with the Credit River gang! She also loved the Minnesota Twins, gardening and cooking – always making sure there was enough for anyone that was at her kitchen table. Helen was a strong woman and made sure that her family knew she was in charge!
Being promoted to grandma brought countless years of happiness. She doted on each grandchild, loving all 17 of them deeply. Just like she was for her children, she supported her grandkids at sports events, school musicals, 4-H activities and graduation. Just as she adored them, her grandchildren loved and adored their Grams.
Helen always had a strong faith and her faith guided her through life. Helen made sure her children had a strong foundation, sending them to St. Michael Catholic School. She was a devout Catholic and known as a pillar in the St. Michael Church Community. During difficult times for her or her family, she would pray the rosary and believe that God only gives us what we can handle.
As Helen entered her later years, she continued to work on the farm ~ keeping the books, canning, baking, and packing bag lunches for the guys doing the fieldwork. She would read the Star Tribune every day and was an avid news watcher! She had a remarkable mind, was quick and sharp – always remembering everyone’s birthdays and even what the weather was like on specific days years ago!
