Jack’s Life Story
On April 15, 1929 in Crookston, MN Jack Russell was born to parents Claude and Beatrice (Spence) Carpenter and was greeted by LouBelle, Bert, Floyd and Bill Spence who had joined the family after the death of their parents. During the depression years, Jack’s family made many sacrifices along with many wonderful memories.
Jack graduated in 1947 from Crookston Central High School where he managed the sports teams. His National Guard unit was activated by the army during the Korean War and he served as a mess sergeant at Camp Rucker, Alabama.
Returning from the service, Jack started his career in sales. Working his way through the ranks, Jack loved all aspect of this profession, from working with the sales groups, to store owners and attending the trade shows. Jack made many lifelong friends throughout the years. He held sales and management positions over his long career, retiring at age 70 from Fox River Mills.
Jack and Sue were married on March 8, 1969 in Bloomington, MN. Bachelor Jack began his new life with his wife, three daughters, Lynda, Lori and Lisa, plus a cat named Suzie!! After the girls married Jack and Sue moved to their new home on Candy Cove in Prior Lake. Their 5 grandchildren grew up swimming, fishing, boating and ice skating at Grandma and Grandpa’s “play ground”.
Upon retiring from Fox River Mills, Jack and Sue took many wonderful trips here and abroad. They loved traveling the country in their “fun bus” often stopping to see his old customers. While visiting Florida they found a home in Winter Haven and fell in love with the Four Lakes community. After purchasing their condo in Bloomington in 2009 they have had the best of two worlds– –summers with family and friends in Minnesota and winters in Florida.
In Jack’s free time he was an avid reader, loved to go to lunch with the guys and dinners with all his special friends and family. He loved to volunteer in the ice cream shop at Give Kids The World in Orlando and supporting Boys Town in Nebraska.
Jack was deeply loyal to his family and friends. He was sensitive yet humorous, persistent and very generous of his time. He was a loving and dedicated husband, Dad, Grandpa and friend. A true fighter throughout life’s illnesses. Jack lived a full life of 83 years until the morning of Friday, September 28, 2012. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Sue; daughters, Lori (Darrell) Phillips of Rochester, Lisa (Keith) Hustad of Lakeville; grandchildren, Chad Kraml, Matt Preston, Amy Kraml, Dain Phillips and Mitch Preston; great-grandchildren, Mikaya, Amareon, London, Sydney, Janiyah; sister-in-law, Mavis Spence; brother-in-law, Richard (Barbara) Perron; goddaughter, Debbie Perron; nephews, Mike, Bob and Ken Spence; nieces, Chris Gjerness, Lora Sanford, Ann Nelson, Rhonda Sanders and Gayle Spence.
Jack is preceded in death by his daughter, Lynda Preston; parents; brothers, Bert, Floyd and Bill Spence; sister LouBelle Nelson; sister-in-law, Mary Jane Spence.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, October 3rd at 12:00 noon with visitation beginning at 10:30 at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church, 9900 Lyndale Avenue South, Bloomington, MN. Father Dennis Zehren will officiate. Grandson, Chad Kraml will have the honor of being Jack’s urn bearer. Jack will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota, Minnesota.
