Jerry’s life story

Gerald O. Schulberg

A long-time resident of Prior Lake, Gerald Orville Schulberg, age 72, passed away with his beloved family present at his side, late Sunday evening, January 19, 2014, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, MN. The Celebration of Life Service will be on Friday, January 24 at 1 pm, with visitation three hours prior, at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home 4565 Pleasant Street SE, Prior Lake. On Wednesday, September 24, 1941 in Minneapolis, MN, Jerry was born to parents Orville E. and Mary Margaret (Williams) Schulberg. He was the sixth of seven children. Growing up in south Minneapolis, near Minnehaha Creek, Jerry spent a great deal of his childhood raising ducks and geese and became a master of the species, breeding and caring for them.

Jerry married Doris and had three beautiful daughters, Carrie, Stacy and Susan. The marriage lasted many years but they eventually parted ways but kept their children a top priority between them. Through mutual friends, Jerry was introduced to the love of his life, Dawn Anderson. On September 9, 1972 at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, they declared their love for each other. Jerry and Dawn were then blessed with four beautiful children, Jason, Casey, Cassie and Callie.

Jerry’s career was spent working for the airlines in Customer Service Support for 31+ years where he quickly acquired the nickname ‘Doc’. He started at Braniff Airlines, then spent the majority of his career at Western and then on to Delta when they merged. Over the last 11 years, he has been immersed in the world of Dance with his wife and daughters Cassie and Callie. His support was never ending with building the successful business of Premiere Dance Academy, and Schulberg Enterprises. One of his proudest moments was when the new building was built for the Academy. He was so proud of it and was thrilled for all of the dancers to enjoy their new dance home. He never missed a recital and thought Dads n Dollz was the greatest production to watch and also be a part of when his health allowed.

In his spare time, Jerry continued to raise ducks, geese and chickens. A love for the outdoors, he was an avid hunter and treasured his deer hunting trips to Warroad. Jerry also enjoyed fly fishing in Alaska for salmon and sitting around big bonfires at home and at the cabin. He could be heard cheering on the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, or found sitting quietly putting puzzles together, or at the slot machines hitting it big at Mystic Lake. He loved taking annual casino trips with his friends each winter and all the fun it brought. Jerry was a master storyteller and chef. Never afraid to try a new recipe or experiment, he loved to cook and grill. Jerry was best known for his smoked turkeys, salmon, venison sausage and the best wild rice soup you’ll ever eat.

The biggest passion in Jerry’s life was his family and friends. He was incredibly proud of the amazing accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed the time spent at the pool with his grandchildren and at the cabin on the island, playing cards into the wee hours of the night, watching movies outside, and telling stories and all the laughter.

Jerry had a kind and gentle heart, everyone always said that he was so “easy going”, and they were right. Not much bothered him and he always wanted the best for everyone. He was an amazing Dad and Papa, had a great sense of humor and an encouraging personality. If you got a wink from Jerry, you knew everything was going to be Okay.

Jerry touched so many lives and hearts throughout his life. Over the past 20 years he amazed his doctors with his strong fight against heart disease. His family is devastated and deeply saddened, but Jerry’s love will be remembered always by those who greatly loved him, especially wife of 41 blessed years, Dawn; children, Carrie Volante of Bloomington, Stacy (Troy) Kaisershot of Lonsdale, Susan Schulberg of Prior Lake, Jason (Jessica) Schulberg of Prior Lake, Cassie (Mark) Norgren of Savage, Callie (Nick) Iversen of Burnsville; grandchildren, Teo Volante, Taig Volante, Ave` Volante, Ayla Volante, Dakota Kaisershot, Rylie Schulberg, Nash Schulberg, Tucker Norgren, Pyper Schulberg; beloved grand dog, Greta; sisters, Betty (Richard) Hurley of Bloomington, Marlys (Mike) Pierce of WI, MaryLynn (Joe) Jambor of Georgia; sisters-in-law, Wanda Schulberg, Clarice Holsen; brother-in-law, Jack Sullivan; and many loving nieces, nephews and devoted friends.
