Jerry Ries

Jerome John Ries

Jerry was born on July 10, 1935 to parents, Nicholas and Elizabeth (Zweber) Ries. The youngest of five siblings, Jerry grew up in New Market and graduated from New Prague high school.

He and Marilyn Pranke were married on June 15, 1957. From that union they were blessed with four children, Steve, Cyndi, Scott and Jerry. Marilyn and Jerry later separated ways, but continued as life-long companions. Marilyn remained a faithful caregiver during Jerry’s illness.

Jerry shared his lifelong love of music with all he touched. Whether he was out dancing with taps on his boots at Minnesota Music Café, McCrackin’s, or The Point, playing the harmonica on stage or just out singing and clapping along to his favorite bands, Jerry was happiest when surrounded by music and people. Well into his 70’s, Jerry was a regular on the dance floor. He loved listening to bands with his sons.

Jerry was a hard worker who enjoyed physical labor. Professionally he worked in plumbing, masonry and construction. Whether digging a basement, helping with landscape or setting up the trampoline for his granddaughters, Jerry was always the first one to offer to help.

Jerry (aka Butch, Ol’ Jerry, Jake the Snake, or simply Jake) raced motorcycles with his three sons throughout Minnesota in the late 70’s early 80’s, and stock cars at Elko Speedway and Raceway Park in the late 80’s. He was excited to watch and hear about NASCAR races until his last days, always knowing the point leaders. Jerry was meticulous in caring for his bikes and loved to ride them with his sons.

Jerry was a devout Catholic. He was a faithful follower of the Lord who always attended church, whether it meant walking in the snow and rain from his retirement home or getting dressed up in his final days at the care center, he ensured he attended mass. He was thoughtful in his prayers and was purposeful in ensuring he included those in need.

He will be deeply missed by his sons, Steve (Heidi) Ries of New Prague and Jerry (Kelley) Ries and granddaughters, Ellen and Abigail Ries of Prior Lake; former wife and lifelong companion Marilyn Ries of Lakeville; brother, Leander (Marie); sister, Bernadine (Eddy) Bogemann; and sister-in-law, Donna Ries.

He will be welcomed into heaven by his daughter, Cyndi; son, Scott; parents, Nicholas and Elizabeth; and brothers, Ben and Greg.

Mass of Christian Burial for Jerry will be Monday, September 21, 2015 at 6:00PM with gathering from 4:30-6:00PM all at the Church of St. Michael, 16311 Duluth Avenue SE, Prior Lake, MN. A reception will follow the Mass at the church.
