JoAnn B. Hannaman, a 59-year resident of Savage, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on
Sunday, March 18, 2018. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 28, 2018, 11:00 am at South Blue Earth Church in Bricelyn, MN. JoAnn will be laid to rest at the South Blue Earth Cemetery.
JoAnn was born February 15, 1935 in Frost, MN, to parents Laverne and Margaret (Engess)
Roberts. She was the oldest of three children. Following her high school graduation, JoAnn
attended Minnesota State University in Mankato where she earned her teaching degree.
Teaching was more than a job for JoAnn—it was an enriching, meaningful vocation that she
dedicated herself to for more than 30 years. JoAnn’s students were her pride and joy.
JoAnn began her career in Minneapolis before working for the Bloomington School District until
1969. JoAnn briefly stopped teaching fulltime as her family grew but continued teaching as a
substitute in the public schools in Bloomington and Burnsville. JoAnn also substituted and
volunteered for Redemption Lutheran’s elementary school in Bloomington.
When she wasn’t working, JoAnn enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Along
with her family, JoAnn road tripped to nearly every state. She especially enjoyed visiting
Branson, Missouri on several occasions. With her friends, JoAnn loved playing bingo—denim
bingo bag in hand, JoAnn knew all the best places to play! She was able to play every night of
the week without going to the same place twice. JoAnn was also active in her community.
Serving as a merit badge counselor in the Savage Boy Scout Troop #445, where JoAnn and her
husband were very involved.
JoAnn’s great sense of humor and kindness will be missed by her children, Anthony Hannaman,
Mary Welch, James Jr. (Diane) Hannaman, Curt (Mary) Hannaman; grandchildren, Krystina
Hannaman, Jozy Brink, Elizabeth (John) Prechel, Josh Hannaman Kyle Welch, Alex Hannaman,
Timothy Hannaman, Kalyssa Hannaman; great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Prechel, Ronan Prechel;
sister, Jean Roberts; other loving relatives and friends.
JoAnn is greeted in heaven by her husband, James; parents; brother, Michael Roberts.
