Kathryn’s Life Story
Kathryn A. Clark
A resident of Shakopee, Kathryn Alice Clark was 79 when she passed away peacefully in the presence of her family in the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee, MN. A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2012 from 3-6 p.m. at the Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, 833 South Marschall Road, Shakopee. Kathryn will be laid to rest next to her husband at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis at a private family burial on Monday, September 24, 2012.
Kathryn (aka “Gran,” “Katter,” or “Kate”) was born on Saturday, February 4, 1933 in Fairmont, MN, to parents Roy and Gertrude (Van Brunt) Nugent. She was the middle of three children. Kathryn’s childhood years were spent on the family farm in Bemidji, MN. Growing up during the depression years, Kathryn often talked about the inventive ways they would stretch their food supplies to feed a family of five. They would wake up on particularly cold mornings and the water glass next to the bed had a layer of ice on it. But regardless, she assured there was always a lot of fun as a family and a home filled with laughter.
After graduating as a Lumberjack from Bemidji High School, Kathryn moved in with her sister in Minneapolis. It was here she met a young man named Art Clark. On April 4, 1953, they exchanged wedding vows in Minneapolis. All Kathryn ever wanted was to be a mother, and her wish was granted with three children, Kevin, Brian and Teresa.
For her children’s early years, Kathryn was a dedicated wife and mother. She was very involved and took great pride with their school activities, attending and cheering them on at their sporting events. She also had the time to be a den mother for the scouts, chaperone at school field trips, etc. She had a love for music and passed this love on to her children, playing records and often singing show tune medleys as they did the dishes.
After the kids were all in school, Kathryn worked for 10 years as an Accounts Payable Clerk for B. Dalton at the general office. Her life took on a whole new meaning when she became a grandmother. For many years, Kathryn watched and nurtured her grandchildren. Treasuring these times, she loved taking them shopping and enjoying their cute smiles and actions. At the young age of 56, she became a widow when Art passed on February 20, 1988. Kathryn soon retired and moved into an apartment.
The last 10 years, Kathryn has enjoyed reading romance and murder mystery books (not to mention the weekly edition of People Magazine). She enjoyed watching soap operas and played cards with some of the ladies at her apartment building. Five months ago, her life was improved considerably when she became a great-gran to Henry Carroll, the precious apple of her eye.
Kathryn leaves behind her sons, Kevin Clark of Shakopee, Brian (Barbara) Clark of Chaska; daughter, Teresa Clark of Savage; grandchildren, Sarah Clark, Natalie (Andy) Carroll, Patrick Clark, Emily Clark; great-grandson Henry Carroll; sister, Mary Ann “Duff” (Jack) McClellan of Hibbing; brother, Patrick Nugent of Orlando, FL; other relatives and friends.
Kathryn is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur and parents, Roy and Gertrude.
Memorials are preferred and will be distributed in Kathryn’s memory by the family.
The Clark family is served with honor, care and compassion by Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, Shakopee Chapel.
