Larry’s life story

Larry Henschke

At the age of 71 and a long time resident of Prior Lake, Larry Luverne Henschke passed away unexpectedly the evening of Thursday, November 14, 2013, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, in Minneapolis, MN. Family will greet guests on Monday, November 18, from 4-7 pm, at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home 4565 Pleasant St. SE, Prior Lake and also one hour prior to the service at church. The Celebration of Life Service will be on Tuesday, November 19 at 11 am, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church 5634 Luther Road SE, Prior Lake. Reverend John P. Vaughn will preside. Interment will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Prior Lake.

LuVerne and Marcille (Kiecker) Henschke proudly announced, their second of five children, Larry born on January 7, 1942, in McIntosh, MN. Larry’s childhood years were spent growing up on the farm. He listened to many Dodgers’ baseball games while milking cows. Larry participated in 4H, showing pigs, sheep and goats. As a young boy, he enjoyed playing the guitar and piano. Larry also loved hunting, pheasants, ducks and deer. In 1960, he graduated from McIntosh High School.

After attending a trade school for electronics, Larry landed a job with Allis Chalmers in Moorhead for 5 years. In 1970, he was transferred to Bloomington and spent the next 14 years there. Larry then took on a custodial management position with Chaska School District for the next 20 years, with retiring in 2007.

Larry knew the first time setting eyes on a sweet gal named, Vonda Hanson, that she was the girl he was going to marry. On December 21, 1963 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, MN, they said, “I do.”They were blessed with two precious daughters, Julie and Kara. As a family, they enjoyed spending weekends camping all over the Midwest. Since 1999, the family has enjoyed permanent sites in Waseca and Pine City, sitting around the campfire, fishing –even catching an occasional rock, boating and frog hunting with his boys.

A Jack of All Trades, Larry could fix just about anything. He was always lending a helping hand to anyone who needed help. Larry was also a detective by disguise. There was nothing the girls or you could get away with…for he always found out what you were up too. Larry was best known for his purchases, with most items being bought in multiples. He was also known for selling of items, with his filing cabinet being his wallet, with every important contact and number.

Larry’s true passion in life was his family. They meant the world to him. Larry was always worrying about them, making sure they were taken care of and especially relished being with them. He was a proud papa and great-papa and had a hard time saying ‘no.’ A huge Dodgers’ fan, Larry loved to listen to all types of music, giving everyone nicknames and tending to his flower gardens. He enjoyed playing golf, having coffee with friends and cooking and baking for family functions. Larry also enjoyed many excursions snowmobiling with the Prior Lake Snowmobile Club and his family.

A generous and hardworking, Larry had a great sense of humor. A devoted and loving husband, dad, papa and great-papa, Larry will be deeply missed and remembered always by his wife of almost 50 years, Vonda; daughters, Julie (Tony) Stier, Kara (Ryan) Raschke; granddaughters, Megan Stier, Briana (Miguel) Flores; grandson, Andrew Raschke; great-grandsons, Brady Stier, Edward Flores-Stier, Ayden Flores, Cristian Flores, Christopher Flores; sisters, Jan (Ron) Oppegaard, Judy (Lynn) Peterson, Carol (Darryl) Peterson; brother, Dave (Sue) Henschke; sister-in-law, Jennelle Swanholm; brother-in-law, Lloyd (Dorla) Hanson Jr.; four-legged friend, Max; other loving relatives and devoted friends.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, LuVerne and Marcille. Pall bearers for Larry will be Terry Blom, Art Gesswein, Dave Moline, Dick Norrish, Larry Abrahamson and Tim Streesland.
