Leona Schmidt

Appolonia “Leona” Rose Schmidt passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at the age of 97. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at 11:00 AM with visitation one-hour prior at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Prior Lake. Father Tom Walker will preside and Roger Reiter will act as Leona’s urn bearer. She will be laid to rest with her beloved husband, Gilbert and daughter, Vonnie at Resurrection Cemetery in Minnetonka.

It was a cold winter’s day on January 8, 1919 when John and Cecelia Heitz welcomed their daughter Appolonia Rose into the world. Leona was one of 12 children and loved growing up on the family farm in St. Bonifacius with her siblings. It was on the family farm that Leona learned the wonderful cooking skills that followed her throughout her life.

As a young woman, Leona met a wonderful man named Gilbert Schmidt. They quickly fell in love and soon became husband and wife. Leona and Gilbert settled in Minnetonka and were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Vonnie. Leona was so proud of her daughter, and loved spending time with her.

For many years, Leona worked as a school cook. She prepared many wonderful meals for the school kids, and she loved every minute of it. Eventually Leona retired from her position at the school, but she always remained a wonderful cook.

In 1993, Leona lost the love of her life. Gilbert passed away on January 15, 1993. This was a difficult time for Leona, but she had the love and support of family and friends to get her through it. In 2000, Leona moved to Credit River to live with daughter and son-in-law. Roger and Vonnie welcomed Leona into their home and took wonderful care of her for many years.

Leona loved sitting out on the deck and watching all of the wildlife. She also liked when Roger would bring her fresh produce from the garden. Leona would clean up the veggies and prepare a delicious meal with them.

Family and faith were the two most important things in Leona’s life. She always had a very special relationship with her daughter. Leona also developed a very close bond with her son-in-law and his family. She was so thrilled to be a great-grandma to Mackenzie and Nolan. Leona also had a special place in her heart for the four-legged members of her family. She especially loved her toy poodle, Toby.

Leona was a kind and quiet lady. She will be remembered always by her son-in-law, Roger Reiter; step-grandson, Russell (Susan) Reiter; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Nolan Reiter. Leona was greeted in Heaven by her husband, Gilbert Schmidt; daughter, Vonnie Reiter; parents, John and Cecelia Heitz; and her siblings.
