Marian Isabelle Sass

Marian Isabelle Sass, 89 of Belle Plaine passed away on Friday, Nov. 23rd, 2012 at the Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Nov. 27th from 4-8p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Belle Plaine and also one hour prior to the service on Wednesday, Nov. 28that 11:00 a.m. Interment will be a private ceremony in Oakwood Cemetery, Belle Plaine. Urn bearer will be Connie Lehman.

Marian was born August 18th, 1923 in Jordan to parents Tony and Hazel (Smith) Schmidt. She was baptized, confirmed and married in the Methodist Church in Jordan. She graduated from Jordan High School. On June 7th, 1941 she married Robert Sass in the Methodist Church. On July 13, 1941 she transferred her church membership to The First Presbyterian Church in Belle Plaine where she and Robert lived.
She was an active member there for 71 years where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and was financial secretary for many years. She was active in the women’s group, opening her home every Monday for seven years to work on craft projects for the church bazaar. She also was very active in the Eastern Stars, holding the office of Worthy Matron at least twice. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary for many years.

Bob and Marian owned the Coast-to-Coast Store in Belle Plaine for 25 years. For many years, Marian enjoyed fishing with her family and friends up at their lake home. They spent 23 years wintering in McAllen, Texas where they made many friends from all over the US and Canada.

Marian’s hobbies included painting, ceramics, needlepoint on canvas, and knitting on hangers. She loved cooking & baking for her family and friends; her specialties were maple creams, fruitcake, caramel rolls and crab salad. She also loved to play cards, especially Canasta; solitaire and other board or card games. She and Bob loved to dance and it was at a dance that they first met. Marian was a loving and wonderful Mother and Grandmother. She was a gracious, beautiful, generous, nice and caring lady; everyone that knew her loved her.

Marian will be deeply missed by her 4 daughters, Gloria (Roger) Graham, Marilyn (John) McSweeney, Cheryl (Bill) Dreyer all of Belle Plaine and Gerri (John) Hennen of Prior Lake. Her 12 grandchildren are;
Noreen (Brian) Schultz, Connie (Dan) Lehman, Ron Mueller, Tara (Brad) Eckel, Andrea Hennen, Jeremy (Lauren) Hennen, Jen (Ryan) Remmers, Amy (Ross) Malin, Dan (Megan) Chard; 25 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

She was proceeded in death by her loving husband Robert Sass; her son, Ronald Sass; her parents, Tony and Hazel (Smith) Schmidt; brother, Gene Schmidt; sister, Dorothy Betchwars; son-in-laws, E. Michael Newell and Roger Mueller; grandchildren, Michael, Patrick, and Deborah Newell.

The Sass family is served with honor, care and compassion by Ballard-Sunder Funeral and Cremation Services, Jordan chapel.
