Mike’s Life Story
Michael “Curly” Harrington, 67, of Jordan, died March 14, 2013 in his home. He was diagnosed with Corticobasal Ganglionic Degeneration on February 23, 2013.
Mike was born in Springfield, Minnesota on August 27, 1945 to Don & Jenny Harrington. He graduated from Loyola High School in Mankato, MN, received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Mankato State University. He taught physical education and coached boys basketball at Cleveland Schools for 9 years and at Jordan Schools from 1980-2002. He was active in the Jordan Lions, St. John’s Catholic Church and volunteered with the Jordan Foodshelf. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, golfing, hunting & fishing, the Cincinnati Reds, Boston Celtics, Twins and the Minnesota Gophers. He was known for his running, his wonderful sense of humor and his smile.
Kathie and Mike were introduced to each other by Mike’s brother David while working at the Grand Theatre in Mankato. Kathie was a candy girl and Mike an usher. They had first met several months earlier on the day Mike was named to the 1963 State All Tournament Basketball Team. Mike and Kathie married on April 29, 1967 at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in Mankato. Together they raised 3 children and were blessed with 3 grandchildren and one on the way. He loved sharing his passions for sports with his sons. As a Grandpa he was known as a “soft touch.”
At the age of 67 and a resident of Jordan, MN, Mike passed away peacefully in the presence of his family and entered God’s arms on the morning of March 14, 2012.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kathie; sons, Kevin (Jennifer) of Victoria, Jamie (Dana) of Montevideo; daughter, Beth Ann of Savage; grandchildren, Liam and Maggie, MaKena and grandbaby due in April; brothers, David (Sandy) of Anchorage, AK, Tom (LaVonne) of Janesville, MN, John (Judy) of Mankato; sister, Trisha of Mankato; nieces, Jennifer (Jon), Jena; nephews, Wayne (Terra) and Michael.
Pallbearers are his friends of many years who joined him for hunting and fishing trips (for 33 years) and also their annual (40 years) baseball trips to watch their favorite major league teams play on their home fields; Dick Johnson, Tom Keenan, Steve George, Ray Lindberg, Pat Duenwald, and Gary Jordahl.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents Donald and Jenny (Jenniges) Harrington.
Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, Jordan, and one hour prior to Mass at church. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, March 18, 2013,
11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Jordan, MN. Father Timothy Yanta will officiate. Interment Spirit Hill Cemetery, Jordan.
