Raymond “Ray” Scherer, age 72, of Prior Lake, MN, fought a good fight and went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 23, 2024, at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 11:00 AM, with a gathering from 9:00-10:45 AM, at St. Michael Catholic Church (16400 Duluth Avenue SE) in Prior Lake. Father Frankie Floeder will preside. Ray will be laid to rest at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery.
Raymond Eugene was born on January 24, 1952, in New Prague, MN. He was the fourth of six children of Eugene and Grace (Boehmer) Scherer. Ray and his siblings, Jerry, Willie, Bob, Kenny and Susie grew up on the family farm in Spring Lake, MN. It was a very active farm milking cows, tending to the pigs, and raising crops. But the boys still seemed to find time to get into mischief on the farm or around the local creek. Ray and his family eventually moved off the farm, before experiencing the deep loss of their father in 1968. Grace and her children persevered through the sadness and continued Eugene’s legacy. Ray attended St. Michael Catholic School through the Eighth Grade with graduating from Prior Lake High School in 1970.
Ray, along with some friends, further their education at a vo-tech to learn the trade of a butcher. This didn’t last long for him. He then took on a position at Owens Illinois Box Company and later with a landscape business for several years. He even had a pig roasting catering business on the side. Ray’s true calling came with AMS Express (a trucking firm) where he was the Vice President of the company, until the business sold. In 2014, Ray expanded his wings and became the owner and president of Ray’s Metro Service, Inc. It became a trusted trucking company specializing in air and ocean freight pickup and delivery, and truckload moves. Ray poured his heart and soul into building a very successful business. He spent countless hours assuring things were perfect for the employees and the customers. Through this success, Ray built many longtime friends across the United States, who deeply respected him.
When Ray wasn’t working, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Ray was a longtime member of the Prior Lake Sportsmen Club and the Minnesota Deer Hunting Association. He and especially his sister, Susie enjoyed summer and winter fishing locally and trying their luck Salmen fishing on Lake Michigan. Weekends were made for family and friends. He loved dining at the Ranchero Supper Club in Webster on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon drives around the countryside. Ray found quietness in the day tending to his flowers gardens and then sitting back to enjoy the view he created.
It was Ray’s personality that shined the brightest! He loved to pull pranks on people and make them laugh. Ray welcomed you with a big hug and smile. Back in the day, he loved playing Santa for families and in the community. Ray had a huge circle of friends. He was always there as a groomsman and then for some as a pall bearer. Ray was kindhearted and didn’t have a mean bone in his body. He always watched over family and friends to assure they were Okay. One of his greatest attributes was making 35 years sober free on September 15th. The last four years, Ray watched his health decline, but he never gave up. He kept pushing forward. But God had other plans and called him home. Maybe God needed help with His trucking needs in Heaven.
Forever missed, Ray will be forever loved by siblings, Jerry (Rose) Scherer, Willie (Donna) Scherer, Susie McNeal; nieces and nephews, Jeremy (Kristin Puck) Scherer, Jeff Scherer, Matt (Paige) Scherer, Amber Scherer, Nick Scherer; great-niece and nephew, Morgan, Mason; special care giver Ann Pekarna-Wolf; other relatives and devoted friends.
Greeting Ray home in Heaven are his parents, Eugene and Grace Scherer; brothers, Bob Scherer, Kenny Scherer; brother-in-law, Jim E. McNeal; and nephew, Scott Scherer.
Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation proudly serves the Scherer family.
