Dick’s life story

Richard “Dick” D. Boles

On Friday, December 19, 1941, in Detroit Lakes, MN, Richard Dean was born to parents, David James Jim” and Olga (Fingalson) Boles. The older of two children, Dick’s childhood years were spent growing up on a farm in Wheatland, ND and later in Ada, MN. As kids, he and his younger brother, Jerry have many fond memories riding and tending to their horse, Tony. Dick attended high school in Ada and graduate from Detroit Lakes.

In 1960, Dick proudly served in the United States Marines. He served during the Vietnam War and the Cuba crisis, while being stationed in Okinawa and 29 Palms in California. He was honorable discharged in 1964.

Through mutual friends, Dick met a young lady named Sandra Jean Braaten. They courted for six months and on September 24, 1965, at Elim Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND, Dick and Sandi exchanged wedding vows. They were blessed with two children, Jeremy and Jessica. A dedicated dad, his children meant the world to him. Dick loved and cherished attending their sporting activities and working and playing side by side with the kids. As a couple, Dick and Sandi enjoyed traveling, with special vacations to Maui, Mexico, Bahamas and visiting family out west.

Living their first two years of marriage in Fargo, Dick’s jobs took them the next 46 years to the Burnsville and Prior Lake area. For over 30 years, he worked for Mid-West Veterinarian Supply Company. Starting out at ground level, he later became sales manager. A love for the outdoors, Dick decided to switch careers. He became the owner and operator of J& K Lawn and Snow Service. Dick later owned and operated the Prior Lake Lakers, selling sporting paraphernalia.

A love for sports, Dick, in his earlier years, enjoyed riding snowmobiles, bowling and playing softball for United Methodist Church. In his later years, Dick took up the game of golf. He was nonjudgmental and accepted people for who they were in life. Hardworking, Dick was often compared to the energizer bunny; he just kept going and going and going.

A beloved and wonderful husband, a gentle and kind father and giving papa, Dick passed away peacefully the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home, at the age of 71.

Dick leaves behind his beloved wife of 48 years, Sandi of Prior Lake; son, Jeremy and Colleen; daughter, Jessica and Brandon; 9 adored grandchildren; brother, Jerry and Karen Boles of Andover; sisters-in-law, Marge and Kenny Willeson of Lamirada, CA, Natalie and Bob Thompson of Moorhead, Irene and John Hocking of Vancouver, WA; 36 beloved nieces and nephews; loyal pets, Petra and Pepper; other loving relatives and devoted friends.

Dick is welcomed in heaven by his infant son, Christopher Dean; parents, Jim and Olga Boles; parents-in-law, Ingvald and Doris Braaten; niece Kari Lee Boles and his faithful furry friends, Saber and Gertie.

Urn bearers for Dick will be his brother, Jerry surrounded by his wife Karen and Dick’s grandchildren.
