Richard (Rick) Alfred Lockert
Richard (Rick) Alfred Lockert was born February 19, 1944 to Bernice Hauge in Lemmon, South Dakota. Rick was an only child growing up on a small ranch near Bison, SD. He attended grades 1-8 in a one room school house and was taught by his mother, Bernice. He and his mother then moved to Lemmon, SD so he could attend high school. They lived with his grandparents, Esther and Alfred Hauge, and graduated from Lemmon High School in 1961.
Following high school, Rick enlisted in the United States Navy where he served our country from 1962-1965. He served in the Pacific on the USS Piedmont and attained the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Rick was married to Jacqueline Mensing and moved to Brookings, SD where Mike and Karri were born.
In Brookings, Rick received his Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science and Business at South Dakota State University. From 1969 to 1971 he served as an Association Fieldman for the Federal Land Bank in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. Rick then returned to SDSU from 1971 to 1974 as an Assistant to the Dean of Resident Instruction while obtaining his Master’s Degree in Plant Science. From 1974-1977 he was a Trust Officer of the First Northwest Trust Company in Aberdeen, SD. During his time in Aberdeen, Rebecca was born. Then in 1977, he returned to Lemmon to own and operate The Men’s Store, a men’s apparel store. From 1984-1985, Rick served as Agricultural Loan Officer for the First Bank of South Dakota and then became Vice President of a consulting firm. Rick then returned to banking as a Manager of the Consumer Loans Department for Norwest Bank Iowa in Mason City, IA.
Rick’s path brought him to Jordan, MN in 1988. He became the Branch Manager for Norwest Bank, which changed to Valley Bank (1991). In 1999, Rick was hired as Vice President of what is now HomeTown Bank where he worked until his retirement on November 9, 2012.
He enjoyed spending time supporting the communities he worked in. In 1996, Rick was awarded the Distinguished Service Award. It is a lifetime achievement award given annually by the Jordan Jaycees and Commercial Club. He was also a member of the Heimatfest Committee, the Jordan Commercial Club, the Jordan Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Jordan Art Festival. In Lemmon, he was the Chairman of the Diamond Jubilee, Director of the Chamber of Commerce, member of the business development, agricultural, and education committee for the chamber.
Rick was an instructor of Religious Education in various capacities for 40 years. He also liked to spend his time at the Jordan Mini Met working the concession stand.
Rick enjoyed each transition in life, but most importantly, he loved to spend time with his kids and grandkids. He attended his children and grandchildren’s concerts, athletic events, school activities and many more meaningful events. His time was well spent enjoying the simple pleasures of life with Nancy and her family. Almost every day he had coffee with his many friends in Jordan. Rodeos were a big interest in his life and made efforts to attend the Belle Fourche and Boss Cowman Rodeo. The Annual Family Barn Dance in the Black Hills was always a highlight for him. Rick was a loyal fan and supporter of Jordan Baseball, the SDSU Jackrabbits, and the Minnesota Twins.
Rick was 68 years young when he passed away peacefully in the presence of his children and Nancy. He entered God’s arms on the evening of November 28, 2012.
Rick leaves behind his children; Mike (Sarah) Lockert of Helena, Alabama, Karri Beath of Ankeny, Iowa, Rebecca (John) Ringsmuth of Jordan; his close personal friend, Nancy Busch of Shakopee; grandchildren, Olivia and Nick Lockert, Connor and Claire Beath, James and Maria Ringsmuth; Jacqueline Mensing Lockert (Mother of Mike, Karri, and Rebecca) and many relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his mother, infant son, Stephen Troy Lockert and infant grandson, Joseph Richard Lockert.
Pallbearers for Rick will be John Breunig, John Betchwars, Butch Mamer, Kai Hammer, Bob Wolf, and Dave Holzer.
Visitation for Rick will be Sunday December 2nd from 4:00 – 7:00pm at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home in Jordan, MN, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Mass of Christian burial will be Monday December 3rd at 11:00am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Jordan, MN. Rick will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery, Jordan, MN. Military honors will be provided by the Jordan Honor Guard.
Memorials will be preferred and distributed in Rick’s honor by the family.
