Roman Hertaus , age 80, of Prior Lake, MN, passed away unexpectedly , from a brain bleed , on Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at Fairview Southdale H ospital , in Edina, MN.
A time of gathering will be on Friday, July 24, from 4-7 pm, at Ballard-Sunder Funeral and Cremation, 4565 Pleasant St SE, Prior Lake and one hour prior to the Memorial Mass on Saturday, July 25, at 11 am, at St. Michael Catholic Church, 16400 Duluth Ave SE, Prior Lake. Memorials preferred and distributed in Roman’s memory, by the family.
Honorary bearers will be Andrew Hertaus , Tim Hertaus , Bill Hertaus , Ron Hertaus , Roger Skluzacek and Ken Kes. Roman was laid to rest at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery on March 27, 2020 .
Roman John was born on January 16, 1940 , to William and Elizabeth (Marek) Hertaus . He was born and raised on a farm Southeast of New Prague , MN , in Wheatland Township . Roman graduated from New Prague High School in 1958 . He then joined the United States Army Reserves from 1958-1965 .
In 1962, Roman received a Barber’s license. For the next 58 years , he served his community in this trade and relished the interaction s with his client, with many becoming life-long friends . Of those years, Roman was self-employed for twenty plus years , in Bloomington, MN , r ight up until the Coronavirus stopped him from working. He was a member of the Minneapolis Barber Association.
Roman met the love of his life, Janice Kech el y , while attending a dance at the New Prague Ballroom, in New Prague. They declared their love for each other on August 8, 1964, at St . Wence s l aus Catholic Church , in New Pragu e. Roman and Jan made their home in Prior Lake and were bl essed with two amazing children, Todd and Penny. In the ir early years, the family ha d enjoyed many adventures camping and just being around each other. Besides his wife and children, Roman ’s passion in life was being a grandpa to grandson, Andrew. He was his world! Roman enjoyed going to Andrew’s football and baseball games. He also looked forward to the annual father, son, grandson outing to the Twins game, at Target Field for Father’s Day.
A devoted Catholic, Roman was an active member of St. Michael Catholic Church , as a Communion minister, sacristan and a volunteer for the AprilFest . He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus .
Roman loved life ! He enjoyed golfing , bowling, and dancing, especially with his bride. Roman enjoyed being outside working , in the garden and yard. He loved playing cards, watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings . Roman also loved doing Sudoku puzzles ever y day. In 2009, Lisa Hertaus , so graciously gave him the Gift of Life, by donating one of her kidneys to him. We were forever grateful.
Forever loved and missed by wife of 55 years , Jan; children, Todd (Marion) Hertaus , Penny Hertaus ; grandson, Andrew Hertaus ; brother-in-law, Clarence Skluzacek ; sisters-in-law, Bella Hertaus , Diane Pexa , Joyce Hertaus ; many nieces, nephews; other relatives and devoted friends.
There to welcome Roman home in heaven are his parents , William and Elizabeth Hertaus ; twin brother, Raymond Hertaus ; other siblings, Lorraine (Tom) Kes, Alvin Hertaus , William Hertaus ( i nfant) , Dorothy Skluzacek , Fritz Hertaus and brother -in-law, Leonard Pexa .
