He was born May 20, 1965, in Minneapolis, MN, the son of Mike and Joyce (Felling) Turner. He was a 1983 graduate of Burnsville Senior High School and a 1987 graduate of St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN. After graduating from college, Shawn worked as a Financial Analyst for Miller and Schroeder Financial Inc.. He then worked as a Systems Analyst for IDS which later became Ameriprise Financial Services. Shawn took a 1-year break from Ameriprise to teach high school math at Roseville High School but returned to Ameriprise Financial Services and finished his career there.
Shawn was a devoted and active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Prior Lake, MN. Prior to that, he was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Savage, MN. Shawn had a deep love for his faith and church. He sang in both church choirs, was an usher, taught religious education (CCD), and was an active member of Life in the Spirit.
Shawn was a very generous man, donating financially to many different charities and organizations, such as Compassion, Sharing and Caring Hands, Cross Catholic Outreach, and many others too numerous to mention. Shawn also donated his time and talents to help others as well. Over the years, Shawn taught General Education (GED), English as a Second Language (ESL), delivered Meals on Wheels, etc. Shawn took time to make everyone he came in contact with feel important, heard and loved; he leaves an indelible mark on his family, church and all those whose lives he touched.
Shawn had an infectious smile, laugh and sense of humor. Growing up, he loved to pretend he was a radio or sports announcer, and he would 'broadcast' a very descriptive and entertaining play-by-play, largely exaggerating reality to the amusement of all those listening. His humor carried over into his adulthood and many looked forward to his annual Christmas letter, which was filled with Shawn's sharp-witted tales of his many adventures throughout the year.
Shawn's interests included hiking, fishing, baseball, and travelling. Every year, he travelled with a group of friends to a different professional baseball park to take in a ball game, play some mini-golf and tour the area. He loved to go on fishing/camping trips with friends as well; Quetico in Ontario, Canada was one of his favorite fishing destinations. Shawn was also passionate about touring National Parks. He visited Glacier National Park in August 2024 which was one of his favorites.
Shawn is survived by his parents, Mike and Joyce Turner, Burnsville, MN; sister and brother-in-law, Kim and Scott Kostelecky, Maple Grove, MN; sister, Shannon Turner, Ashville, NC; brother and sister-in-law, Ryan and Jennifer Turner, Eagan, MN; nephews, Tyler and Cody Kostelecky and Max Turner; niece, Cassie Turner; aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Erma Felling and Dorothy Starr.
Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation proudly served the Turner family.
