Stephen M. Casey

Stephen Michael Casey, age 44 of Prior Lake, passed away at his home on Sunday, August 21, 2016. A visitation will be held on Friday, August 26, 2016 from 9:00AM-11:00AM with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM all at St. Michael Catholic Church, 16311 Duluth Avenue SE, Prior Lake. Father Tom Walker will preside. Stevie’s ashes will be scattered on Games Lake in New London Spicer along with the ashes of Steve’s faithful black lab, Miller.

On January 15, 1972 at St. Francis Hospital in Shakopee, Dick and Diane Casey celebrated the birth of their son, Stephen Michael Casey. He was the youngest of the family’s four children. From a young age, Stevie was persistent in doing whatever he set his mind to, especially if it meant having fun. As a toddler, he rode his Big Wheel so often his parents would need to buy replacements. All the neighbors knew him for his playful demeanor. They affectionately gave him nicknames—Stevereno, Reno, Buckster, and Buck—some of which he didn’t always like.

When Stevie began elementary school at St. Michael’s, saying goodbye to his family became a morning ritual. He’d go outside to wait for the bus only to come running back for a hug and kiss. Stevie would do this repeatedly until the bus arrived. Always affectionate and caring, Stevie was a great hugger. He expressed his love for family and friends in many ways—giving gifts, playing practical jokes, or simply spending time together. He enjoyed boating, being outdoors, and hunting with his father, brother, and cousins.

In his youth and adulthood, Stevie excelled at sports, whether it was softball, hockey, golf, or soccer. In grade school, Stevie made a hole-in-one at the Lone Pine Country Club, although it was never acknowledged by the staff. He participated in men’s softball and hockey leagues. Hockey was one of Stevie’s greatest passions—he was an adamant Wild fan.

Stevie attended Prior Lake High School, graduating in 1990. He continued to work at Viking Liquor, his family’s business, eventually becoming a manager. Along with his mom, Stevie helped establish and promote the store’s wine tasting events. Those who met Stevie knew him best for his genuine personality and interest in their lives. He was a fun loving, carefree, fearless individual who was always loyal to his family and friends. Stevie will be greatly missed by his parents, Dick and Diane Casey; siblings, Lorie (Jack) Schlichting, Jim (Karrin) Casey, Kristine (Brad) Krenz; nieces and nephews, Ben, Katie, Joey, JT, and Addie.

Stevie has gone to a place where he can continue to be the best son, brother, and uncle that his physical body would no longer allow him to be. A piece of our heart left with Stevie and we are profoundly saddened by our loss. He is saving a place for us all.
