Vera’s Life Story

Vera Cecilia Deutsch

Born on Friday, August 18, 1922 in Jordan, MN, Vera Cecilia was the daughter of Ernest and Anna (Beckius) Wermerskirchen. She was the fourth of six children. Vera’s childhood years were spent in the Jordan area, attending a country school and later St. John’s Catholic School through the eighth grade. As a young girl, Vera enjoyed playing the piano and had a fond love for horses, especially Percherons and Clydesdales. She enjoyed assisting her brothers in showing the horses, as they won numerous championships.

At the age of 18, Vera met a young man, Edwin Deutsch at a dance. On Wednesday, October 29, 1941 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan, MN, Vera and Edwin exchanged wedding vows. Blessed with five children, Glen, Gloria, Monica, Maureen and Lisa, they settled their roots on a farm in St. Benedict, MN. As a couple they enjoyed traveling, which took them through most of the states in the United States including Alaska and Hawaii and the countries of Germany and Austria. Staying closer to home, Vera and Edwin cherished the many hours spent fishing up north. Life changed for Vera, when Edwin passed on April 15, 2000. Selling the farm in 2000, she spent the rest of her years living in New Prague.

For 19 years, Vera worked for Excelsior Plastic Company in Belle Plaine. In her earlier years, she worked as a nanny and cleaned homes. Vera also spent time working as a bartender at Wagner’s Supper Club and some summers was employed at Green Giant.

Vera was an avid reader, loved to play cards, watch the horse races at Canterbury Park and spend countless hours hand making quilts, stuffed animals and various other pieces. Her biggest passion in life was her family. As a mother, Vera relished raising and guiding her children through life. As a grandma, she truly adored watching the grandchildren grow into accomplished young adults; in return they too adored their grandma. Over the years, Vera enjoyed the next generation, her great-grandchildren.

A kind, gentle and loving woman, Vera was also a faithful servant of God. Her motto, “There is always something to do, something to look forward to and someone to love.” A resident of New Prague, formerly of Jordan, Vera was 90 years and two days old, when she entered God’s arms in the evening hours of Monday, August 20, 2012 at Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague, MN.

Forever loved, Vera will be deeply missed by her children, Glen (Florence) Deutsch of Buffalo, Gloria (Bill) Rose of Plymouth, Monica (John) Kragthorpe of Savage, Maureen (Bill) Farrell of Carmel, IN, Lisa (Jeff) Menden of Prior Lake; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Rita Olesen of Eugene, OR; sisters –in –law, Lorraine Wermerskirchen of Jordan and Margaret ‘Peggy” Wermerskirchen of New Prague, Eunice Deutsch of Jordan, Aurelia Hoen of Shakopee; many other loving relatives and friends.

Vera is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; parents, Ernest and Anna; siblings, Alfred (Florence and Doris) Wermerskirchen, Lee (Delores) Wermerskirchen, Francis Wermerskirchen, Ernest Wermerskirchen Jr.; brother-in-law, Ray Olesen.
